When "SirCam" and "Code Red" hit the web there was a lot of confusion on some of the forums I subscribe to. I wrote this as a working essay on the "basics" of viruses. If you would like to write me with any specific questions you have about viruses you may. However, I expect you to have read the entire document here first. Otherwise you will be directed to do so. I receive many e-mails regarding viruses which are answered in this document.
Without a complete understanding of the methodology of viruses you are at significant risk when you "think" you are safe (usually from having been misinformed about either viruses or computers in general). This essay intends to dispel those misunderstandings and provide you with a solid understanding of both how viruses work, and what tools and knowledge is absolutely necessary to protect yourself from infection.
Before I start, I'll take a moment to say that viruses, trojans and worms are all "technically" different things. However, for the purposes of this document (and as far as most of the world cares) I will be using only the term "viruses". It is intended as a general term. There are notes within this document indicating the differences when one applies.
If my computer seems to be operating correctly, is it safe to assume that it is not infected?
I use an almost unknown product (like Pegasus/Opera) for my email/web browsing – am I safe?
What is a 'worm,' and what do you mean my anti-virus program can't save me from them?
