ICANN will press ahead with plans to introduce new top-level domains, including some so-called Internationalized Domain Names written in Chinese and Arabic scripts, its board decided unanimously Thursday.

Thursday's decision will not, of itself, create specific new gTLDs: The board has simply approved a policy proposal that will form the basis of a set of rules for creating and managing new gTLDs. The Xbox 360 recall a year ago happened because "Microsoft wanted to avoid an ASIC vendor," says Bryan Lewis, research vice president and chief analyst at Gartner. Microsoft designed the graphic chip on its own, cut a traditional ASIC vendor out of the process and went straight to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., he explained.
