City officials in Boulder, are investigating whether plutonium, the key ingredient in triggers for nuclear bombs, was washed into their municipal wastewater system when the metal was spilled during a project at the NIST.

According to a report in the Denver Post, the contamination may have reached the municipal system when two people involved in the spill a week earlier washed their hands in a washroom, just feet from the lab where a vial holding a quarter gram of plutonium powder was spilled.

An unspecified number of federal workers on the Boulder, Colo., campus of the National Institute of Standards and Technology will have to be treated for plutonium contamination after an accident.

NIST officials confirmed that a "small number of personnel" have tested positive for the exposure and will undergo chelation treatment in hopes of preventing an advanced risk for cancer.

The document was obtained from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by Judicial Watch, a Washington group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, and it has details of 10 deaths just since September.

Louisiana's oversight of private group homes for abused and neglected children is inadequate, and conditions are often abysmal in facilities that are charged with caring for some of the state's most vulnerable residents.

The litany of problems in group homes investigated by the Advocacy Center ranges from poorly trained staff and shoddy facilities to a failure to provide adequate medical and dental care. And the state rarely punishes homes that run afoul of state regulations.

Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is recalling 39,000 Chinese-made key chains after lead was found in the products, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The button, clover, leaf and heart charms on the "Hip Charm" key chains were found to have high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested, the agency said.

The project is the brainchild of Edinburgh College of Art student Ross Colquhoun and will go on public display this month. Staff at the School of Biological Sciences at Edinburgh University helped out after being contacted by the 24-year-old.
